6 Ways A Mobile Phone Can Make You Smarter

Posted by Welcome September 8, 2009

We’ve all looked at some guy jabbering away on his mobile phone and thought to ourselves, “what an idiot”. People who speak carelessly on their phones often make those around them privy to their not-so-great ideas and beliefs. And people who behave rudely on their cell phones cause the rest of a crowd to assume that they lack the common sense to engage appropriately with an intelligent society.

However, the cell phone does not have to be a tool which dumbs down your appearance to the world around you. In fact, the mobile phone has many features that can make you seem a whole lot smarter than you really are. By using tools like cell phone audio tours and taking advantage of “phone-a-friend” moments, you can make your phone work for you so that you present yourself to those around you as an intelligent person. And who knows, you might even learn a few things in the process.

Here are some of the top features and tricks to use if you want your phone to make you seem smarter than you really are:

Cell Phone Audio Tours

This is one of those fascinating phone services which can actually help you grow your knowledge while impressing others with your tech-savvy approach to events. Cell phone audio tours are essentially tour guides which you download to your cell phone in order to gain information about the things that you’re seeing around you. For example, a trip through a museum may be enhanced by downloading an informational tour to your phone which you then listen to as you walk through the museum.

Cell phone audio tours are also available for major attractions, historic areas and as walking tours to guide you through learning a new city. You’ll gain information about new things as you wander through the world; sharing that information with others is going to let them see just how smart you really are. It’s amazing how far a little bit of trivia can go towards impressing others!

Trivia Alerts on your Cell Phone

Speaking of trivia, you can use your cell phone to boost your trivia knowledge on a daily basis. There are several services available which will send you bits of trivia each day through SMS messages on your phone. You can then relay that trivia to others throughout the course of conversation. Everyone will figure that you’re that guy who is interested in (and intelligent about) a wide range of different topics. News alerts and other types of informational alerts can also be used in this way.

Phone-A-Friend Moments

The cell phone can also be used to assist you in times when you need access to specific trivial information. People who watch game shows know that the cell phone can be a terrific tool for rapidly getting you the information that you need but don’t have stored in your brain. For example, the U.S. game show Cash Cab is a series of trivia questions which earn the players money if they answer them correctly; one of their methods of doing so is that they are allowed to make a single mobile phone call to a friend who might know the answer.

Most people aren’t going to wind up on this type of game show but it’s a trick that can be used to seem smarter than you are. If you’re at the bar with a group of people playing pub trivia, you can use your phone to text someone with a question and then provide the answer to your group. (Of course, you’ll have to do so discretely since bar trivia usually has rules against it!) It’s even something that you can do when you simply want to show off your knowledge of a certain topic. Text a friend or hop online and get the information that you’re seeking and then relay that to the person (probably a date) who you are trying to wow with your knowledge.

Taking An Important Call

Outgoing calls aren’t the only way to impress people with your phone; incoming calls can also be an important tool in boosting the appearance of your intelligence. As any girl who has ever been on a blind date knows, your cell phone can really be your ally in getting you out of sticky situations. The trick for ladies on dates is to have a friend call them halfway through the date; if it’s going badly she can tell her date that the call is an emergency and she has to leave. The “smart guy’s” version of this is to have people strategically call you during times when you need to make an impression with your intelligence.

For example, let’s say that you’re meeting with a group of investors to discuss funding for a new project. Have a friend call you at a time when you know others will be around but the meeting won’t be taking place (such as in the moments before the start of the meeting). Use your end of the conversation to speak intelligently about a topic at least tangentially related to the one at hand. Keep it short and sweet, displaying your commitment to the work and your ability to discuss it with others in a smart manner.

Informational Cell Phone Applications and the Eye-Phone

We’re increasingly seeing applications developed for cell phones which provide the consumer with the opportunity to access intelligent information. For example, a mobile phone application called Pocket Journey (which has recently gained attention as a winner of the first round of Google’s Android platform development challenge) provides you with information about almost anything around you. Community members can enter information about events, attractions, and locations which you can then access on your mobile phone. (Think Wikipedia on the cell phone).

A similar type of technology (dubbed the Eye-Phone) was displayed in this year’s European Satellite Navigation Competition. The Eye-Phone uses satellite technology along with advanced object recognition and location services to determine what you’re seeing around you. For example, you might see the Statue of Liberty and want to know more about it. You would take a photo with the Eye-Phone, the phone would identify what you were seeing and the phone would then provide you with information about the object.

Both the application-based and hardware-based tools can be used by someone who is interested in showing off his smarts. Combining the best of audio cell phone tours with phone-a-friend style trivia information, these solutions make it easy for you to rapidly get information about the things that are around you. Whether you want to use that information to impress someone that you’re with or you simply want to show off the fact that you’re smart enough to care about accessing that kind of knowledge, it’s a tool which can assist you in appearing smarter than you really are.

Information on the Mobile Web

As the mobile web becomes more widespread, it’s going to be easier than ever for you to access information through your phone. It’s increasingly common to simply Google what you want to know and that’s going to be something we do more and more often on the cell phone. Smart consumers are going to take advantage of the capability of the mobile web to make themselves seem (and perhaps even to actually get) smarter than they really are. Combined with the software and hardware solutions that allow us to access additional information, it is possible to use your phone as a means of enhancing your intelligence (rather than taking away from it as we so often manage to do!)
