Nokia N97 Mini gets official!

Posted by Welcome September 8, 2009

This one’s about as surprising as a new Pirates of the Caribbean movie but none the less, for those of you who’ve been living under a rock/ on the moon for the past 6 months, Nokia have officially announced the Nokia N97 Mini. Originally leaked online by Vodafone Ireland and then subsequently in various blurry and not so blurry spy shots, the N97 Mini is exactly what you’d expect; a scaled down version of the N97. With the full fat version only launching a matter of months ago, is there room in the world for it’s little brother? Read on as we take a look at all the official specs for the Nokia N97 Mini…

The most obvious place for Nokia to shed some pounds is in the physical weight and dimensions of the phone so it will come as no surprise that the N97 mini is considerably smaller than its bigger brother. The Mini comes in at 113 x 52.5 x 14.2 mm, shorter, narrower and thinner than the N97 by 5, 3 and 1mm respectively. The N97 Mini is also considerably lighter at 138 g, 12 g less than the N97. The touchscreen display shrinks from 3.5 to 3.2 inches though does sport the same resolution which should give the illusion of an even sharper display than its predecessor. The form factor is of course the same meanin

g we get same slide/ tilt qwerty keyboard though the D-pad on the keyboard has been sacrificed in the down sizing. This could well be classed as a good thing as many found the d-pad surplus to requirements with the touchscreen and keyboard providing the perfect combination for navigation.

And it’s not just the size of the phone that’s been given the mini treatment. The new N97 features 8GB of internal memory, down from 32GB, though there is still room for a microSD card slot to bring the memory up to 24GB. As for the rest of the hardware, not alot has changed. The Mini features the same ARM 11 434 MHz processor and 128MB RAM of the N97 and runs the same version of the Symbianoperating system (Symbian OS v9.4, Series 60 rel. 5 in case you wondered). The camera is the same 5.0 Megapixel Carl Zeiss Autofocus camera though this time without a lens cover (Nokia have employed supercar weight saving tactics it would seem!). HSDPA, Wi-Fi, GPS, an FM Transmitter and
Bluetooth are all present though those of you hankering for a capacitive touchscreen display will be disappointed; Nokia have stuck by resistive technology for the Mini.

So it really would seem that the Nokia N97 Mini is purely aimed at those who found the original just a bit too bulky for their liking and, perhaps more importantly, a bit out of their price range. For you see the N97 Mini will ship at a healthy £70 less than it’s bigger brother (£429 compared to £499). Expect the price difference to increase further on a pay monthly contract as the N97 Mini is expected to come in free on a wider and cheaper range of pay monthly tariffs.
